A partnership’s success story
In 1991, Berlin’s basketball club was within inches of declaring bankruptcy. What saved them was a chance encounter between two men at the barber shop: Franz-Josef Schweitzer, ALBA CEO, and Gerhard-Ulrich Schmidt, vice president of the BG Charlottenburg sports club. Soon afterwards, ALBA became the main sponsor of Berlin’s basketball club, and Schweitzer imposed only one condition: the players should show more dedication.
No sooner said than done. BG Charlottenburg is renamed “ALBA Berlin”, and the company and the basketball team became a winning combination. On the court and off, their common motto has applied for more than fifteen years now: “Success is rooted in team spirit, top performance from each individual, and exacting, scrupulous work.”
Eight championships
Germany’s capital gets what it deserves: a top-ranking basketball team. In 1995, ALBA Berlin win the Korac Cup before an excited audience of 10,000. For the first time, a German basketball team is winning an international cup. Two years later, the club wins the national championship. Other cup victories follow, and ALBA Berlin twice advances to the quarterfinals in the European League—the royal class of European basketball.
Moreover, ALBA Berlin is repeatedly voted Team of the Year and wins Germany’s most famous athletics award. In 2006, the club becomes a registered company, ALBA Berlin Basketball Team GmbH. The spokesman for the Supervisory Board is ALBA co-owner Dr. Axel Schweitzer.
