Commitment to KINDerLEBEN

“When one person dreams, it is just a dream. When people share a dream, it is the beginning of a new reality.”
Ellen von Hartz-Geitel Chairwoman of KINDerLEBEN (Association for the Promotion of the Day Clinic for Children Suffering from Cancer)
ALBA has supported KINDerLEBEN since 1997. Franz-Josef Schweitzer, ALBA’s founder, was inspired to establish this association when he visited Professor Günter Henze at Berlin’s University Clinic. At the sight of the young cancer patients, who had to sit on the windowsills for lack of furniture, Schweitzer spontaneously took a decision. Together with several like-minded people, he founded the Association for the Promotion of the Day Clinic for Children Suffering from Cancer.
Thanks to numerous supporters and a generous donation from the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, the Carreras Day Clinic was opened on September 9, 1998 with a ceremony attended by Mr. Carreras himself.
In Germany, some 2000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every year. Three quarters of them are cured, although some remain disabled for the rest of their lives. The sad truth is, around 500 to 600 of these children die.
Cancer development factors are now better known, but further research on the causes of children’s cancer remains crucial. The new health centre—a partner of Berlin’s University Clinic—enjoys international recognition for its successful research work and its treatment of children’s cancers and blood diseases.
The KINDerLEBEN Association makes a dream come true: thanks to the new research facilities, less children, or maybe no children at all, are to suffer from cancer in near future. Moreover, the clinic provides the young patients with optimal care to ensure a minimum of side affects from cancer therapies.
Continuing its active support of the clinic, ALBA has hosted a benefit gala for the association every year since 2001. This has resulted in funds of some €1,000,000. The proceeds from the event go directly to the association, with nothing deducted.
The 7th ALBA Benefit Gala was held on March 09, 2007 at Berlin’s Grand Hyatt on Potsdamer Platz. Once again, famous performers refused to take a fee.
All members of the KINDerLEBEN Association, including chairwoman Ellen von Hartz-Geitel, are volunteers. As a result, no administrative costs occur, and every euro donated benefits the association and its projects.
