Berlin-based recycling technology from ALBA is a winning international export

Technical know-how in worldwide demand

Berlin. Berlin is the leading centre for recycling in Germany, and Berlin recycling know-how is now a winning international export. This is because together with two Chinese partners, Guangdong Rising Assets Management Co. Ltd. and Zhongde Metal Group Co. Ltd, the ALBA Group, one of the leading providers of environmental services and raw materials, is planning on the shared development and operation of several highly efficient household waste treatment systems in differing regions in China. The basis of the planned systems is the Green Fuel Technology developed by ALBA, the use of which is suitable worldwide for the conversion of household waste into so-called "Green Coal".

"The new project in China has provided confirmation of the value of our internationalization strategy, as it demonstrates that our technical know-how is both globally leading and in demand. This means we can also make a major contribution to the conservation of the environment and resources outside Germany," highlighted Dr Axel Schweitzer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ALBA Group. "Working together with our Chinese partners, we will be focusing on the further development of a sustainable loop economy in China at a high technical level."

For the purpose of the realisation of the project in China, a shared joint venture company has been established which is based in Hong Kong. This company will assume responsibility for the construction and operation of the planned systems in China. The technical advice regarding the Chinese systems will be managed by ALBA in Germany accordingly with a team of experts.

“Furthermore the project is able to generate new jobs. When realising eight plants we are talking about more than 500 jobs. At the same time, this is an ecological showcase project: With Green Coal, the total CO2 emissions are around 70 per cent lower in comparison with the use of conventional energy recovery”, Schweitzer continued.

With the help of the Green Fuel Technology especially developed by ALBA, municipal waste will be converted into substitute fuel – Green Coal – after hazardous materials have been separated and recyclables have been extracted. This Green Coal will then be used in the scope of energetic recovery in power stations, for instance. Together with the Berlin municipal refuse department, for several years, over a third of the residual waste in Berlin has been processed using this ALBA technology.

Background:

China is responsible for producing most of the world's waste, and over 70 per cent of municipal waste in china is still sent to landfill sites untreated, with an exceptionally negative environmental impact. The goal of the project of ALBA as well as Guangdong Rising Assets Management Co. Ltd. and Zhongde Metal Group Co. LTD is to help out in this area, and with the planned treatment facilities, to recover the recyclable material from the waste, to extract the hazardous materials, and to convert the rest into Green Coal. In this way, an effective solution is now on offer for each of the two mega-trends in China – too much waste and too few resources As a third generation household waste recycling system the ALBA technology therefore offers clear advantages compared with landfill (first generation) and waste incineration (second generation).

Last year, in the presence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Xi, the ALBA Group signed an agreement with Guangdong Rising Assets Management regarding the participation in the "Green Power" project in the Sino-German Metal Eco City. The agreement concerning the construction of the first facility for the production of Green Coal from municipal waste in China formed a key part of this agreement. The current agreement has extended the project with additional facilities of this kind in China.
