ALBA Group secures first contract in Singapore

Waste management for urban region with 500,000 population

+++ Berlin. The ALBA Group, one of the world’s leading recycling specialists and environmental services providers, is pressing ahead with its expansion strategy in Asia. Following an international tender, the Berlin-based company was awarded the contract by the Republic of Singapore to set up a completely new waste management system. The Jurong urban region with a population of 500,000 is to be served by a digitalised system meeting high environmental standards and providing capacity to collect and treat some 170,000 tonnes of waste a year. Digitalisation of waste management in Singapore counts as one of the most ambitious environmental projects in Asia. +++

“Singapore is one of the most modern cities in the world and a leader in digitalisation,” said Dr. Axel Schweitzer, CEO of the ALBA Group. “It is a major project and an honour to contribute to this development process with our Smart City recycling and waste management solutions. Together with our local joint venture partner, we aim to play a pioneering role here and build a collection system that sets the new standard for the future.”

With a contract value equivalent to some €100 million, the tender was won by a consortium comprising the ALBA Group and a local family-owned recycling company, Wah & Hua Pvt. Ltd. Singapore. The ALBA Group holds 70 percent of the joint venture and Wah & Hua 30 percent. “Singapore has the goal of becoming the first zero waste nation,” Schweitzer said. “That fits in perfectly with our vision of a world without waste.”

The joint venture makes full use of Smart City solutions in modernising waste management for the Jurong region. On the basis of a specially developed waste evolution programme, ALBA and Wah & Hua will tailor innovations to the specific situation in Singapore under the banner of “STEP UP Singapore”. For example, digital route planning is supported by waste containers equipped with sensors that report the fill level to the company’s control centre. Some trucks will have solar mats on the roof to cut fuel consumption. The new vehicles for Jurong will be supplied by German truck makers Mercedes-Benz.

With the household recycling rate currently between just two and four percent, ALBA provides an app to promote household recycling. By properly separating waste, users collect bonus points that they can redeem with participating retailers or other partners. The app also displays the nearest recycling bins and centres in the area and gives tips on green living.
