Dr. Eric Schweitzer was born on 24 July 1965 in Ipoh, Malaysia, and lives in Berlin.
He attended school at Georg Herwegh Gymnasium in Berlin where he completed his Abitur in 1983, after which he studied business administration at Freie Universität Berlin, graduating in 1987 and gaining his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.) in 1990. Following a six-month stay in the United States where he worked in the waste management industry, he returned to Berlin and at the age of 25 became member of the management team at ALBA, the recycling company founded by his parents. Here he was in charge of development and activities in eastern Germany until he was appointed to the ALBA Management Board in 1993. He has headed the family business, which now operates as ALBA Group plc & Co. KG, together with his brother Axel since 1998.
From 1994 to 2006, Dr. Schweitzer was member of the Presiding Committee of the Federation of the German Waste, Water and Raw Materials Management Industry (BDE), of which he was also Deputy President from 2003 to 2006. Between 1999 and 2003 he was additionally Vice President of European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD) in Brussels.
From 2004 to 2016, Dr. Schweitzer was President of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). From June 2010 to June 2013 he was also a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development called into being by the German government. In spring 2013, Dr. Schweitzer became President of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK).
